EA’s mobile games developer IronMonkey Studios revealed in a recent interview for Stealth Optional that it was working on a Dragon Age mobile game in 2010 that was later scrapped. As well as this, they were working on a mobile version of Dante’s Inferno and developing an original third-person shooter IP for nearly three years.
Dragon Age Mobile was being developed while BioWare worked on Dragon Age 2, and aimed to turn the RPG title into a Diablo-style action-RPG fit for mobile. It included a character creator and explored areas of the game’s world that players hadn’t previously experienced in the console instalments. Sadly, the game would never see the light of day.
According to the interview, the reason these games were cut short was because of a move towards free-to-play games with microtransactions, rather than premium paid-for mobile gaming experiences. This trend has continued to this day as we can see from the success of games like Marvel Snap, Genshin Impact, and Fortnite.
